Link Aadhaar: This was said by the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) on microblogging site Twitter. “No need to give fingerprints to local SIM card retailer for your mobile phone verification… From December 1, 2017, you can do it from the comfort of your home through OTP received on the mobile number registered with Aadhaar,” said the UIDAI, the issuer of the 12-digit personal identification number or Aadhaar number.
Modi government has reportedly set a February 2018 deadline for all mobile phone users to link their accounts with Aadhaar for verification purposes.A failure to do so by 6th February 2018, according to telecom service provider Airtel, will result in deactivation of services.
The Supreme Court had earlier ruled in February this year in the Lokniti Foundation case that all SIM cards have to be verified with Aadhaar within a year.telecom companies are already sending text messages to users to contact customer service centers with Aadhaar card details to avoid deactivation. The linking of Aadhaar details with mobile phone user accounts can be done in two different ways
Here’s how the IVRS-based Aadhaar authentication through helpline 14546 works:
Once you call the toll-free helpline 14546, the IVR system asks you whether you are an Indian citizen or an NRI. The caller is to provide response 1 in case of an Indian citizen.
The caller is then asked to enter his or her 12-digit Aadhaar number.
The IVRS then repeats the number entered and asks the caller to confirm by pressing response 1.
After this step, an OTP or One-Time PIN is sent to the registered mobile number.
The IVR system asks the caller to give consent to the telecom operator to pick his or her name, photo, and date of birth from the UIDAI database.
The caller is asked to enter the OTP in the next step.
The caller is asked to press 1 to complete the Aadhaar-mobile number re-verification process.
COMMENTSNRIs/OCIs are not eligible to enroll for Aadhaar and hence fully exempted from any Aadhaar verification of bank accounts/mobile SIM or other services, the UIDAI has said.
The process for linking Aadhaar to SIM is now ongoing, and the deadline is March 31.
The re-verification process has been eased after several complaints by consumers: all it takes now is one call. There’s no system to do it online yet.
Link Aadhaar One-Time Pin is a mode of authentication offered by the UIDAI. Under one-time PIN-based authentication, an OTP with a limited period validity is sent to the mobile number and/ or e-mail address of the Aadhaar number holder registered with Aadhaar. “The Aadhaar number holder shall provide this OTP along with his Aadhaar number during authentication and the same shall be matched with the OTP generated by the Authority,” according to the UIDAI website – uidai.gov.in. Besides OTP, the UIDAI also offers biometric-based authentication.
In its bid to simplify the process to link Aadhaar with mobile SIM, the Department of Telecom (DoT) recently introduced three options to link UID with mobile connection: an app-based method, an OTP-based method, and an IVRS facility. The telecom operators have welcomed the latest clarifications by the DoT on Aadhaar card linking.
Telecom users will soon get more options to complete the process of linking their Aadhaar card with the mobile connection. “These new methods will help subscribers to get their mobile number linked to Aadhaar without visiting the stores of the telcos (telecom companies),” the Department of Telecom (DoT) said in a press release dated October 25.
